Deconstructing Directing is
Going on a Fringe Tour!

And we are casting!

The work of a director is almost entirely unnoticed by most audiences, because less than 1/5 of what we do is directly connected to what those audiences see on stage. We’re revolutionizing the training of directors, but we want to help change how audiences understand the work of directing too.

So this summer, we’re hitting the road with:

DIRECTOR’S CUT: WHERE PLAY BECOMES MAGIC

🔥 IT’S NOT IMPROV. IT’S NOT A PLAY. IT’S SOMETHING ELSE. 🔥

Improv is made up on the spot. We start with a real script—then break it apart, rebuild it, and find something new.

A director. A cast. A single scene. One hour to make it unforgettable.
🎭 Cut. Rework. Blow it up. Try again.
🎭 Brilliant or disastrous? You decide.
🎭 Every night, a different show. No do-overs.

It’s theatre on the operating table—mid-surgery.

You think you know how theatre is made? Think again.

🔺 This isn’t a rehearsal. This is the art of directing, unleashed. 🔺

Where we’ll be:

Central Virginia Fringe: 1 show, June 14-21
KC Fringe: 5 shows July 13-27
Minnesota Fringe: 5 shows, July 31-August 10
Indy Fringe: 6 shows, August 14-18

CASTING CALL

About the Project

Director’s Cut is a whirlwind scenework-as-performance opportunity that will be directed live each night by Deconstructing Directing Founder and Archivist, Andrew Roblyer. Each performance will feature Andrew and 2-3 actors developing a scene from scratch in front of a live audience, centering the directorial perspective and process.

Scenes may be “blank scenes” (also known as open scenes or A/B scenes), classical text, or scenes submitted by playwrights, and audiences will choose that show’s scene at the top of the performance, so we are looking for actors who love to play and are not afraid to push themselves in front of an audience.

The unorthodox nature of this performance means that there will not be any rehearsal of the work being performed, though actors will meet with Andrew for a “test run” rehearsal to establish a working relationship, either online via zoom or in-person prior to the start of each festival.
