FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Is this class only for beginners?
A: Not at all. While the course offers foundational tools, it’s designed to deepen your approach no matter your experience level. Newer directors will get a strong framework to build on, and seasoned directors will have the chance to reexamine old habits, reconnect with purpose, and refine their leadership approach.
Q: I’ve taken directing classes before. How is this different?
A: Most directing classes focus on mechanics: blocking, table work, staging. We do cover those — but through a wider lens. This course centers who you are as a leader in the room and how that impacts the work. It’s as much about trust, collaboration, and decision-making as it is about scene structure.
Q: Do I need to have a show coming up to take this?
A: Nope. You’ll be working with a short 10-minute play or scene provided during the course. It’s designed to be practical and applied without needing a full production on your plate.
Q: What if I can’t make all the live sessions?
A: Live attendance is encouraged for the best experience, but all sessions are recorded and available for replay. You’ll still be able to participate in assignments, reflections, and feedback.
Q: Do I need actors or a rehearsal space for the assignments?
A: You’ll need access to 2–3 people (friends, students, colleagues, or local actors) for short weekly rehearsal exercises. These don’t require a stage — a living room, classroom, or Zoom call works just fine. The focus is on your process, not production values.
Q: How much time should I expect to commit each week?
A: Plan for about 3 hours per week:
90-minute live Zoom session
60-minute rehearsal
30–60 minutes for reflection and review
This is designed to fit into a working artist’s life — meaningful, but manageable.
Q: What if I’ve never directed before?
A: Perfect. This course gives you a clear, structured entry point — not by giving you a list of rules, but by helping you understand why directors make the choices they do and how to lead with clarity and care.
Q: Is this only for theatre directors? Could this apply to film or other creative leaders?
A: The examples and exercises are theatre-based, but the core leadership and collaboration skills apply to anyone working with actors or creative teams. If you're a filmmaker, choreographer, or deviser, you’ll still find a lot of value here — just know it’s rooted in stage practice.
Q: Will I get feedback on my directing?
A: Yes! You’ll submit short video reflections from your rehearsal assignments and receive thoughtful, individualized feedback. It’s not about critique — it’s about helping you grow.
Q: Is this course accredited? Will I get any kind of certificate?
A: While this isn’t a college course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. For Texas educators, we’re also approved to offer Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours.
Q: Is there a payment plan or sliding scale available?
A: We want this course to be accessible. Payment plans are available, and a limited number of sliding scale or scholarship spots may be offered depending on enrollment. Reach out — we’d love to work with you.
