THE KINETIC METHOD: Mastering Scene Dynamics for Writers
Don't just write what they say. Direct what they do.
Join the 90-minute intensive that translates the rigorous tools of the Theatre Director into a practical framework for fiction writers. Move beyond "talking heads" and learn to construct scenes with physical weight, continuous tension, and narrative drive.
Join us December 16th @ 7pm Central
THE PROBLEM:
THE INERTIA TRAP
We talk about the "voice" of a novel. But what about its body?
Many writers struggle not with the prose itself, but with the inertia of the scene.
The dialogue is correct, but static.
The description is vivid, but the pacing drags.
The characters are talking, but they feel disembodied—floating heads in a white room.
Standard writing advice often leans on cinematic metaphors: "frame the shot" or "cut to the next scene." But novelists are not filmmakers. You do not have a camera, an edit bay, or a score.
You need to think like a Theatre Director.
Like a theatre director, you must sustain the tension in a continuous flow of time. You must manage the dynamics of the room—proximity, status, silence, and physical behavior—to keep the audience (the reader) locked in the moment.
THE SOLUTION:
THE KINETIC METHOD
Don't just write what they say. Direct what they do.
The Kinetic Method is a system developed by 20-year veteran director Andrew Roblyer to move beyond syntax and focus on simulation: how to construct a psychological event that feels physically real.
This is not a critique circle. It is a technical masterclass on the mechanics of human behavior. You will leave with a specific framework to turn "flat" writing into three-dimensional performance.

THE SYLLABUS
A Toolkit for Scene Dynamics
In this 90-minute intensive, we will introduce the four pillars of the Kinetic Method:
1. Radical Embodiment (The Cure for "White Room" Syndrome) Move beyond "Show, Don't Tell." We will explore how a character’s interaction with objects and their environment reveals more interiority than their internal monologue. You will learn to use proprioception and "stage business" to ground both your character and your reader in the physical reality of the scene.
2. Engineering Interpersonal Friction Conflict isn't just about arguments; it's about physics. We will apply the director’s tools of Status and Proximity to generate heat between characters. Learn how to manipulate the exterior space (where bodies are) to ratchet up the interior stakes (what characters feel) without changing a word of dialogue.
3. Sharpening Agency with "Actioning" Passive characters kill narrative drive. We will utilize the Royal Shakespeare Company technique of Actioning—assigning a transitive verb to every line of dialogue. You will learn to ensure that every sentence is a tactic used to change the other person, turning "talking heads" into active combatants.
4. Modulating the Pulse (Narrative Drive) Filmmakers create pace by cutting away. Directors create pace by sustaining the flow. Learn to score your scene’s rhythm, managing the "air" in the room to control the reader’s heart rate without needing a "jump cut."
THE FORMAT & DETAILS
How We Work
The Framework: A rigorous breakdown of the core mechanics of each tool.
The Fishbowl: We will use live volunteers to demonstrate the concepts on real pages. (Note: Due to time, not every attendee will have their work reviewed, but all will learn from the live audits).
The Application: You will leave with a specific checklist/worksheet to apply to your drafting process immediately.
Who This Is For
Fiction Writers & Novelists looking to deepen the visceral texture of their work.
Screenwriters who want to master subtext and behavioral storytelling.
Professionals seeking a rigorous, mechanical framework for scene construction that relies on craft, not just "inspiration."

THE INSTRUCTOR
Andrew Roblyer
Andrew is a Houston-based writer, Theatre Director, Educator, and founder of The Octarine Accord, the only theatre company in Texas dedicated entirely to speculative fiction. Holding an MFA in Directing and a background in medical simulation and high-stakes communication, Andrew specializes in the mechanics of human behavior. He is also the creator of the Deconstructing Directing project, an initiative that breaks down the "invisible work" of leadership and storytelling.
